Yoga Philosophy (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider, and CYA-RYSGOLD school)
Shyam Ranganathan MA (SAS), MA, PhD (Philosophy)
Yoga Philosophy Aims to supplement what is already available and taught via yoga schools with research based, expert teaching on yoga philosophy, history and ethics. Add to your āsana, prāṇāyāma or meditation practice with Yoga Philosophy! Yoga Philosophy offers teaching resources for yoga students and teachers, on the one hand, and yoga schools, on the other. For Yoga students and teachers, Yoga Philosophy offers five varieties of educational support for students interested in yoga. (1) Subscription Courses: for those relatively new to philosophy who wish to take longer exploring material, these courses allow for the exploration of material at the student’s own pace. In addition to video lectures that can be viewed at the student’s convenience, students can either send questions to Dr. Ranganathan, or attend a once a week virtual tutorial, where live and present questions are answered: recordings are then posted to the course for the benefit of those who could not show up. Join any time, leave any time. (2) Four Week Intensives: designed for students who wish a short and intense dive into a topic, with continual conversation and contact with Dr. Ranganathan. Students in these courses retain life access to the course content. (3) One hour personal consultations with Dr. Ranganathan, which can be used to explore taught material, or to receive philosophical counseling. (4) Low cost, regular subscription to Yoga Philosophy content, updated each month called “Yoga Philosophy Streaming.”(5) Free courses with some Q and A support via asynchronous billboard discussion, and free emails with free yoga philosophy content (automatically included with signup for other products). For Yoga Schools, Yoga Philosophy offers: (A) Cultural Appropriation Consultation and Review of Yoga School offerings, (B) Yoga Philosophy Modules for Yoga Teacher Training, and (C) group discounts on yoga products available to yoga students and teachers. For any of the latter, please singup to discuss your interests further via the Yoga School Free Course. Yoga Philosophy is founded by Dr. Shyam Ranganathan: a scholar of South Asia, translation expert, and professional philosopher. He is a member of the Department of Philosophy at York University in Toronto, and the York Center for Asian Research. He is translator and commentator of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra (Penguin 2008), editor of The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Indian Ethics, author of Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation (Routledge 2019), and over 50 peer-reviewed, yoga related articles. Shyam is an experienced teacher of students of various degrees of exposure to philosophy and yoga. Shyam holds an MA in South Asian Studies, an MA and PhD in philosophy, and is a CYA-E-RYTGOLD yoga teacher (over 1000 hours training). He founded Yoga Philosophy (yogaphilosophy.com) in 2019 to fill a void of rigorous and research based knowledge of yoga philosophy in the world of practicing yogis. Yoga Philosophy is a registered yoga school (CYA-RYSGOLD) and a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP).
